10th Sept 2008 Sport and Recreation Awards Nominations

The Sport & Recreation Awards encourage, recognise and reward achievements across the Victorian sport, fitness, outdoor recreation and community recreation sectors.

The Awards aim to promote innovative and effective practices and there are 10 awards/categories that cover athletes, Coaches, umpires, administrators, teachers and other people who help out with sport or made some other outstanding contribution to sport in any way.

The CVHA nominations were:

Minister’s Award for Lifetime Achievement – recognises outstanding achievements or contributions by a person, organisation or partnership in any field related to sport and recreation in Victoria:

Julian Hood was nominated for his 35years contribution to CVHA; for being the driving force behind our synthetic pitches, and additionally for working tirelessly for the continued development of Garden Gully Reserve

Volunteer Involvement Award – recognises the contribution made by a volunteer to the industry as a whole or to a specific industry sector:

Mick Lawlor was nominated. Mick’s contributions cover many aspects of hockey; he is passionate about his involvement in all hockey related matters and in particular about juniors and junior development.

Sport and Recreation Education Award – for outstanding achievement in sport and recreation education initiatives in both traditional and non-traditional educational settings.

Our nomination was Umpire Development program and Elaine hood as its administrator. Whilst this program was originally HV template, it has been specifically molded, developed and run locally for CVHA umpires

Young Person in Sport Award – for outstanding contribution by a young person to the industry as a whole or a specific sector

Courtney Waterson – although only having been involved in hockey for 5 years, Courtney has crammed a lot into that time; she’s really applied herself to learning how to play and has been successful in securing a large number of spots in various state squads. In addition Courtney is a community volunteer who assists with rotary club meets and Salvation Army appeals.

FINALISTS Two of our nominations have been shortlisted for the awards scheduled for Mon 6 Oct, MCG 6-9pm. It’s a ticketed event [pre purchase only].

The two CVHA submissions shortlisted are:

Volunteer Involvement Award: Mick Lawlor

Sport and Recreation Education Award: Umpire Development program & Elaine Hood

1st Sept Presidents Update

HV Regional Development project
This grant submitted by HV will assist CVHA in filling in the gaps in junior development throughout CVHA ie. bridging the gap in between H2H & U13’s and hopefully develop programs that will be sustainable for our future.
An initial brainstorm session is being conducted tonight at the grounds which includes those of us that have had either a past or current role in any of these areas. Tonight's outcome will hopefully provide COM with a firm starting point of what we can consider for the best & future application of this funding & project.
HV Development Officer Annette Hatherley will be meeting with COM to assist with preliminary planning for this project. Will provide updates for you as we progress.

Water:
We were fortunate that Julian Hood changed Coliban Water’s mind regarding access to the Rural Water Transfer scheme this year and enabled CVHA to water access until end September instead of June 30.
We are still exploring other options for future water use so we are not so reliant on Council or water authorities for our operations. Although there has not been recent meeting with CVHFMA, it is likely that the ‘wet’ pitch will be shut down over summer in line with other sports ie so we're seen to be sensitive to our local community and other sports;
this will be confirmed following the next CVHFMA meeting.
The water captured from rain and run-off this year will be retained/stored and will assist us with commencing season 2009.To better place us in planning for season 2009 re water, CVHFMA will be going over the water useage data captured regarding run-off & rain collection this season.

Clubrooms:
Council has recently released an offer to tender to conduct the feasibility study for the Garden Gully clubrooms redevelopment. The consultants will be appointed hopefully by mid Oct and we anticiapte a full report by early 2009.
This will then put us in a position to start working on the various funding options available to supplement the funds we've raised so far. It is unfortunate that the timing of the study will be post season but hopefully, through you, the consultants will be able to access sufficient club members and volunteers to gather what they need.
With this in mind if your club agms are in between mid Sep & end Oct we would appreciate new club contact information being sent to our secretary Katrina Bales so your club will still have an opportunity to be consulted.
cvha.secretary@yahoo.com.au

In the meantime, with your current club committees, please put together a 'wish list' of what you as a clubs and your members would like to see in the proposed redevelopment eg 2 x female change rooms & 2 x male change rooms; 2 x umpire change rooms etc; so we can ensure that your priorities are reflected in the feasibility study.

Portable Office:
This is still an ongoing project which has had a time consuming pathway through council. Thank you to Dale for his efforts in this so far and thanks to Julian who will be following this through. With some luck we will have an office onsite for officials and volunteers to get us out of the change rooms and out of the cold! [until the new clubrooms are built].

2009
As most of you know I will not be renominating at our next AGM. As immediate Past President I will conduct a handover and support the new President behind the scenes when required. Additionally, at this point, I will head up the 'Projects' portfolio which will include projects for the grants that we were successful in securing i.e. to see them through to completion.
Through my tertiary study and events management background, I have a strong interest in facilities so i intend to remain on CVHFMA as part of the Clubrooms project working group.
Hopefully whoever nominates to replace me as President is someone with the right mindset, strategic vision and the ability to undertake this role for CVHA as a whole, and continues to take CVHA into the future.

I've attached a summary of current or pending projects. We were hoping to have had these progressed further than what they have been but have been tied up with operational matters that have taken time away from these. Hopefully 2009 will see progress on all these.

My movements for remainder of 2008 [unavailability]
Sep 28 - 4 Oct - Tournament Director for Australian University Games, SNHC Melbourne
Oct 11 - 24 Oct - Alice Springs Masters Games, NT
Nov 12 - 24 - FIJI, Australian Country Team

26th Aug Volunteer for the Month of August - Ben Miles - Umpire

26th Aug Junior Meeting - Monday 1st Sep 2008 7.30pm Venue Change rooms at the ground

Hockey Victoria is interested in CVHA's ability and intent to planning to maintain and grow our junior section and other development programs. To this end HV submitted a grant application to the Department for Planning and Community Development [state government] for junior development in regional areas. CVHA was one of six country associations named in this application and HV was successful with this funding. We need to determine what we want it for, and determine our preferences for what the $ should be allocated towards ie subsidising some of this development vs reimburse/paying an administrator to co ordinate it.
SO, before hockey victoria comes up to talk to us about the project and go over some of the steps involved in it, the Committee of Management would like your input into your vision for juniors & related programs. Additionaly we would like at least one of you as a rep to come to the initial meeting with HV [in bendigo], so if you can give that some thought as to who could/should that would be good.
look forward to seeing you there
Gina

26th Aug Umpire of the Month
May - Jaz Poyser

June - Abbie Ferguson

Having witnessed Abbie both as a spectator and player this year and in my opinion Abbie would be one of the top umpires for the year, both in improvement and standard. Abbie can be forceful when needed, letting players know where the boundries are, using and issuing disciplinary cards if needed, but on the flip side can be jovial and enjoy a laugh with the players in the right context.
This I believe is what a good umpire should strive to be.
Abbie has officiated on a number of hard fought and aggressive games and I believe has handled them well.

July - Rachel Beagley
Just thought I’d give you a bit of a progress update on Rachel Beagley here at the Junior State Champs.
Super nervous on her first game but got over that very quickly and was fine from her second game onwards.
She’s been absolutely thriving on the standard of the matches, on umpiring with competent colleagues, on her involvement as part of the panel and with the coaching she’s received and is blowing us all away with how much she’s improving and is far and away the most improved umpire on the panel.
Be prepared to be suitably impressed!

Well done to all of our winners!

19th June Water Update
Dear All

We have had confirmation that we have been granted access to water from Council's 'rural entitlement' until September 2008.
What this means is that if there isn't sufficient rain this winter we will still be able to utilise Pitch 1 for the remainder of this season [and obviously utilise any run-off water from this].
During this period we will continue to collect data from usage and additionally are still looking into long-term water options for us.

Our thanks and appreciation go to Julian Hood for negotiating with Council and Coliban Water on our behalf.

Regards
